ELEN-MECH: About us

ELEN-MECH. Consulting was founded by Dr. Constantin D. Pitis following his retirement from Powertech Labs and BC Hydro in Oct 1st 2018. Constantin is a professional engineer registered in South Africa and BC Canada with over 50 years of experience in Energy and Power Management, Energy efficiency, Electrical Machinery design, test, diagnose and manufacturing, Power Quality, Distributed Energy Resources (DER) & Renewables, Condition Monitoring and Training in Electrical & Mechanical Engineering.

As Specialist Engineer in BC Hydro – Power Smart Engineering (2007 – 2015) Dr. Pitis completed over 880 energy studies, Technical reviews of various Energy study reports provided by consultants, vendors and customers as part of DSM policy, being directly engaged in site inspections and forensic investigations reports on demand side (MV and LV grids). As Specialist Engineer in Powertech – Grid modernization (2015 – 2018), Dr. Pitis tested his consultancy and business capabilities being largely supported by customers, energy managers and key account managers. His novel concepts of Energy @ Risk, Essential energy and Benchmarking Energy Factor (BEF) are internationally recognized by IEEE International Systems Conference SysCon, 2015 Vancouver, April 13-16 with “Best Paper Award – 1st place at IEEE, SysCon 2015 for “Novel Method of Benchmarking Energetic Efficiency of Industrial Systems”, Paper #1570061307, 

The novel concept has been applied on multiple new type of “Customer Centric` CSA standards supported by Canadian Utilities.

Dr. Pitis and other Power Smart employees contribution to new energy efficiency standards has been recognized by Ms. Bonnie Rose – CSA President in her letter addressed to Mr. Charles Reid – BC Hydro CEO.

In 2010 he received “Legend in Energy” Award at the World Energy Engineering Congress Washington Dec 10, 2010,


Constantin D. Pitis obtained an MSc degree in Electrical (Power) Engineering from Technical University of Jassy (1968), Post-graduate Diploma in Rocket Engineering from Military (Technical) Academy of Bucharest (1978), BSc in Reliability Engineering from Polytechnic Institute of Bucharest (1985) in Romania and a PhD degree in Electrical Engineering from North West University, Potchefstroom (2007), South Africa.


His educational background was set up between 1968 and 1990 working as Scientific Researcher at Energy Research and Modernization Institute ICEMENERG and Scientific Researcher at National Institute for Aerospace Research (INCAS), Romania (Aeronautics Institute), Bucharest, Romania

Within 1990 and 2007 Constantin enhanced his expertise in South African Industrial environment working as Technical Manager In Custom (Cullinan) Electric Motors – currently HEXAGON Electric Pty. His expertise in design, manufacturing, repair, test & diagnose condition monitoring of large variety of electric machinery and industrial applications was consolidated as Project Manager in FEMCO Mining Motors and Marthinusen & Coutts


His Designs of new “P” series of Explosion-proof Motors for SANDVIK Region Africa are competing against reputable manufacturers as BREUER GmbH Bochum–Germany, DAMEL–Poland, FLENDER-LOHER GmbH–Germany, ELIN GmbH-Austria. His designs of energy efficiency motors for special applications of reputable corporation as mining industries: Anglo Gold Ashanti Corporation, Anglo Platinum Corporation, Anglo-American PLC., Howden, AMCOAL Corporation, De Beers, Debswana, Gold Fields, VOEST – Sandvik, BHP Billiton – Samancor, Foskor, (mining, chemical), SA Block and LAFARGE (constructions), Becker Alert PUMPMOR (pumps), MITTAL Steel – ISCOR (metallurgical) are still running in South African Region, Australia, USA and other countries.

Holder of four patents and a copyright electric motor design program, he published over 66 scientific and technical papers on electric machinery diagnosis, design and testing, power converters, energy efficiency, application engineering and benchmarking of industrial systems and processes.
